Apply for Job: Senior Substation Engineer

Lead Substation Engineer, sought by R.G. Vanderweil Engineers, LLP, Multi-disciplinary engineering consulting firm, to be responsible for detailed electrical design of electrical substation projects for power grid infrastructure including entirely new facilities, as well as major additions, rehabilitation, and retrofit projects of electric substation equipment. Ensure compliance with FERC/NERC environmental, safety and utility grid standards and policies. Perform detailed engineering functions including layout of electrical stations, design of station single line and three line drawings, AC and DC Schematics, switchboard panel layout, wiring diagrams, grounding systems, direct stroke lightning protection systems, and other substation related engineering. Direct and guide team of engineers/designers/drafters in support of assigned tasks. Plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate detailed phases of engineering assignments involving multiple major projects requiring the evaluation, selection and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria applicable to functional area of assignment. Determine and document project estimate, scope and schedule. Set and evaluate design options and criteria for technical merit; conduct field visits, verify equipment parameters and determine applicable codes and system specification requirements. Assign project tasks to project team members so that new facilities are provided to customers when needed and within budget. Monitor and coordinate team members’ assigned duties. Prepare documentation and conduct meetings. Write equipment specifications for major electrical equipment to insure proper operation and personnel safety. Appraise and recommend equipment purchases. Direct, monitor, and review designs; interface with client. Approve electrical drawings for manufacturers. Witness major electrical apparatus factory tests. Verify that specs are followed. Accept or reject results of tested equipment. Maintain accurate substation drawings and records. Approve electrical drawings for construction. Develop energization cut-over procedures to minimize customer outages and maximize personnel safety. Provide support to client in temporary equipment setups. Oversee construction work to resolve technical issues that may arise in different phases, including field visits. Provide technical support and interact with legal and environmental groups for licensing/permitting processes.

Position located in Boston, MA.

Requirements include a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering or related field and ten years of work experience in the job offered or related field of substation design or heavy industrial power systems; or, in the alternative, a Master’s degree or equivalent in the above fields and eight years of work experience.

Must have a Professional Engineer (PE) License in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

If qualifying with a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, must have at least ten years experience with electrical engineering, environmental permitting, purchasing and legal regulations, as well as NEC, IEEE, ANSI standards and National Electrical Safety Code. Must have at least ten years experience interacting with clients, contractors, regulatory representatives, and town/city officials, as well as managing multiple projects under budget and time constraints.

If qualifying with a Master’s degree or equivalent, must have at least eight years experience with electrical engineering, environmental permitting, purchasing and legal regulations, as well as NEC, IEEE, ANSI standards and National Electrical Safety Code. Must have at least eight years experience interacting with clients, contractors, regulatory representatives, and town/city officials, as well as managing multiple projects under budget and time constraints.
