Abstract:

The imperative for institutions to dramatically reduce their emissions is driven by the energy required to sustain them and by rapid irreversible changes to the climate that threaten global infrastructures. Our session shares how three different campuses developed campus energy master plans and set incremental goals toward net-zero fossil fuel energy consumption. We will provide a framework that comprehensively addresses energy consumption reduction and conversion to renewable resources while helping building users become more aware of how their actions impact greenhouse gas emissions.

Outcomes:

  1. Communicate to leadership, peers, and students the importance of reducing your institution's greenhouse gas emissions.
  2. Develop an energy master plan for your campus, including setting incremental goals with an end date for net-zero fossil fuel-based energy consumption.
  3. Program buildings so they are an educational tool on energy conservation and renewable energy, use less energy-consumptive equipment (such as green fume hoods), and share opportunities to optimize resource use.
  4. Create an energy-conscious environment and discuss the importance of curricular changes.
