Tour of Alexandria Renew Enterprises Environmental Center

The AlexRenew Environmental Center is Alexandria’s first New Construction LEED Platinum Certified project and winner of the USGBC-NCR 2018 Innovative Project of the Year (New Construction) Award and one of the most advanced water reclamation facilities in the United States.

The Center is the new administration building for Alexandria Renew Enterprises and includes an adjacent athletic field dedicated to the City of Alexandria Parks and Recreation Department. What makes it interesting is the field sits on top of a 28-million-gallon nutrient management facility that is part of AlexRenew’s water treatment process to meet the Chesapeake Bay required mandate. A unique project integrating need for plant expansion and creating an educational and administration facility for the community.

At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Explain how the integrative process on the AlexRenew Environmental Center design can be applied to any project to realize significant energy and water savings;
• Describe the impact and importance of water use reduction and water recycling strategies on projects in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed;
• Explore strategies for designing for flexibility and workplace churn while minimizing waste; and
• Describe how to integrate health and wellness design into both the workplace and public realms.
