Built in three phases, the United Therapeutics Headquarters is a new 242,000 sf office, laboratory, and cGMP facility that is a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) validated pharmaceutical facility. Vanderweil provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing services for this new headquarters which serves as a flagship facility for sustainable design for United Therapeutics. The Phase 1 building is all labs with one floor being a GMP validated pharmaceutical manufacturing space. Phase 2 has one floor of QC labs and another as a GMP pharmaceutical fill/finish space. The Phase 3 building is all office with a large conference suite. The project achieved LEED®-NC Gold certification. An impressive feature is the 150 kW Photovoltaic array utilizing Sanyo HIT panels, a monocrystalline panel with a thin film amorphous coating on top to create a higher efficiency panel. All lighting is fluorescent. The PV connects (per the new 2008 NEC) at the main switchboard.
