The new 190,000 sf research building focuses on the convergence of engineering and the natural sciences. The concept behind this involves the integration of biological, chemical and physical state-of-the art approaches to solve challenging interdisciplinary topics with high societal impact. Through this research facility, emphasis is placed on the discovery of novel resources for renewable energy, the exploration of the properties and the engineering of biophysical and biological systems, and the development of a new generation of biomedical and nano-scale electronic and photonic devices. Vanderweil provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering services for this building, which includes wet and dry laboratories, nano-fabrication facility (cleanroom and imaging suite), an auditorium with video and teleconferencing capabilities; adjacent breakout rooms; lobby; café/lounge; and shared administrative suites, offices, conference rooms, and multipurpose/collaboration areas.
The project has achieved the following awards:
International Interior Design Association (IIDA), Northern California Honor Award (2020)
Best Medical Project: Gold Award, CRE Awards (2019)
