The Fifth XiangYa Hospital provides a new world class model for the delivery of healthcare. The 520,000 m2 hospital is a campus organized in two main groups — a 1,700-bed North Hospital and an 800-bed South Hospital. The separation of the two programs enables the middle campus to create a functional Healing Garden, the heart of the project, axially aligned with the Xianguling Park. The campus, organized around a central concourse, along which all the clinical functions are also situated includes various inpatient towers. There is also two levels of service functions and below-grade parking. The hospital is easily accessible to the surrounding community. The entire campus is accessible to the city and the neighbors, who can circulate around and through it along the Emerald Necklace, a network of paths at different elevations, linking the city to Xianguling Park. Vanderweil developed MEP and sustainable design strategies as a part of the Payette team. Our team designed a central utility plan to serve the campus, and developed energy-efficient MEP systems. Natural ventilation strategies were identified to reduce energy usage during suitable outdoor conditions.
