The New Jersey Public Health, Environmental and Agricultural Laboratory is a new 190,000 sf testing facility. The laboratory addresses not only the ongoing emergence of diseases such as HIV/AIDS, West Nile virus and other public health and agricultural health issues but also Home Land Security concerns related to Bio/chem/rad terrorism. The four-story building includes analytical laboratories, support space, office space, dining and auditorium facilities. Testing of ground water, agricultural crops and pests, soils, new born infants samples, blood and urine samples, and other every day public health analysis are conducted for the State in the building. In addition, 20,000 sf of BSL-3 suites provide for testing of dangerous biological pathogens, chemical and radioactive substances possibly related to terrorism activities or concerns. The need to maintain operations in portions of the building through any State or National catastrophe was paramount to the design of the MEP systems leading to the need for reliability, redundancy and flexibility.
